I know I often write about serious things on this blog which is fine and all, but I also am capable of writing about happy and silly things. So today, I would like you to know about two graphic novel series (with Amazon affiliate links). YMMV, of course. But if these things don’t make you laugh, you’re dead inside (or you and I have totally different understanding of the word, “funny” and we can’t be friends).

Enjoy!

1) Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. by Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen

A short, 12 issue arc, this series is full of everything a superhero comic should be: fights, ridiculous monsters, absurdity, profanity, and absolute hilarity. A send-up of the superhero genre, words were invented so that they could be this funny.

For your quotacular pleasure, I’ve decided to add some quotes. You’re welcome:

The Captain is so absurdly strong that he once smacked someone’s spine through their lungs just by patting them on the back. In his defense, he was quite extraordinarily drunk.

Ellie: I’ve got two Uzis and a shovel. Which, I suppose, means I can shoot things and bury them afterwards.

Boom-Boom: Ew! Ew ew ew ew! They shot their muck all over meee!
Killer Robot: Like that’s never happened before.
Boom-Boom: Shut up and die, robot-face.

I don’t know why I didn’t look up more works by the author, Ellis, earlier. But I plan to. His other books and stories sound hilarious.

2) The Chew by John Layman and Rob Guillory

Currently at 50 issues (with 10 more to go), The Chew features a cop who gets psychic impressions from the things he eats. And also? He’s Chinese American. BAMF! The story is at a good resolution right now so to wait for the final 10 issues is tolerable.

Of course, because I thought it was hilarious (the series definitely gets better and better), the series is again, full of violence, absurdity, and lots of profanity and sex. Also? There is POYO, the murderous, half-cybernetic BAMF chicken USDA Agent that even Satan is afraid of. The POYO intercuts often upstage entire issues.

Also, it is poignant and moving but mostly, AWESOME.

Alright, short post today. But mostly because I want you to get to Amazon or the library or your local bookstore and buy these. They’re funny, feature minorities or have minority authors/illustrators, and are works that I want supported so that I can consume more of their stuff.
